3 Fun Cabin Activities for Kids

Plan a simple dinner that the kids get to cook. It's a great way to entertain them in a cabin.

Adults love soaking in hot tubs and playing cards or reading books late into the night. But what about kids? If your cabin doesn’t have kid-type arcade games, what can you do with them? Here are some ideas:

1. Bring a few surprises. Wrap up some fun new things, like kid’s games and toys that are easy to play anywhere. Let the kids unwrap something when they are feeling bored.

2. Let the kids be the chef. Our kids love to do this anywhere. We choose a simple meal. We have a simple kid’s cookbook that our 8-year-old loves being able to read. We buy the ingredients and set out the supplies. Then we let them go to work. Our kids love to make individual pizzas, macaroni and cheese and dirt pudding.

Planning a group activity can be fun and hilarious. Here is our daughter, Kinsen, and her cousin starring in The Nutcracker.

3. Plan a fun group activity that involves the kids. My in-laws are famous for this. One year, my mother-in-law rewrote the Nutcracker and assigned everyone parts. While she narrated, we had to act out our roles. (Think: My father-in-law as the Sugar Plum Fairy.) The kids got parts too. They LOVED the experience and we have some hilarious photos to go along with the memories. The activities can be simpler, too. My family is planning to play our own version of A Minute to Win It over Thanksgiving. Each family is coming up with a few tasks. Of course, the kids are very excited about it.
