We love this place. You know, for a long time, we drove right by it as we were driving into Gatlinburg. I always assumed it was a tourist attraction, like the other Ripley’s places in town. But I was so wrong. When we actually broke down and went to the aquarium, we had a GREAT time! It’s a really terrific aquarium. In fact, it was recently voted #1 aquarium in the nation by TripAdvisor.
Here’s a post all about the fun we had at the aquarium. But today’s post is about the mermaids that have taken up residence.
Now, I’m not sure how I feel about this. Is it making a serious aquarium into more of an attraction? I don’t know, but here’s the scoop:
According to Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies website:
Mermaids now swimming.
For centuries and in many counties worldwide, people have been fascinated with sea creatures. The myths, legends and folklore of mermaids vary throughout the world. Through history, there have been many stories of sea travelers seeing mermaids. Mermaids have been known to save the lives of sailors after shipwrecks and protect all that live in the ocean. Are they real?
From myths, legends and folklore…Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies presents live mermaids! Enjoy watching Ripley’s mermaids swim amongst their friends! Family-friendly and interactive shows performed daily in Stingray Bay!
Show times are at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m., and 5 p.m. daily. They are daily now, but will go to weekends-only after Labor Day.
And that’s not all that’s new at Ripley’s Aquarium.
Ripley’s also now offers Mermaid and Pirate makeovers for kids at Ripley’s Fancy Fins Boutique.
The Mermaid Makeover costs $34.99 and includes:
- Shimmering makeup
- A beauty bag containing makeup compact, comb, and mirror
- Fashion jewelry
- “I’m a Ripley’s Mermaid” t-shirt
The pirate package is just $19.99 and includes:
- Eye patch
- Bandana and tattoo
- Ripley’s pirate t-shirt
Well, leave it to Ripley’s. I can’t decide if this is the most fun idea ever or the most ridiculous one! But I’m pretty sure my kids would love it!
